Forfeit/Default/Eligibility Policies

IM Sports Eligibility

1.  The IM Sport program is open to full-time or part-time matriculated students and to faculty, staff, Continuing Education/graduate students who are paid members of the Recreation Center.  A current ID card must be available.  Students must remain registered for classes the entire intramural season.  Full-time, part-time and Continuing Education/graduate students must be able to show proof of medical insurance if requested by the Recreational Sports staff.

2.  No former or current professional player of the sport may play.  A professional player is defined as one who has received money from a professional team/organization upon signing a contract; played professionally overseas; received other forms of compensation, including but not limited to travel expense, meal money, clothing, cars, etc.,  or has signed with a professional agent.

3.  Players currently on a varsity or j.v. team or who have played in any j.v. or varsity games, or who were on the roster as of the first regular season game may not play on an intramural team in that sport during the same season; e.g., j.v./varsity soccer players joining a fall co-rec soccer team or basketball players on the team first semester joining an intramural team second semester is prohibited.  Varsity/j.v. athletes may play in similar intramural sports during the off-season; e.g., j.v./varsity soccer players may participate in spring indoor soccer.  In this situation, a team is limited to a combination of two former and/or current varsity/j.v. players on its roster.  Exception:  Only one former or current varsity/j.v. soccer player may play on an Indoor Soccer team.

4.  Any team may have two former varsity player of the particular sport or similar (e.g., baseball players on a softball team) sport on the intramural team.  An indoor soccer team may ONLY have one former or current varsity/j.v. soccer player on its roster.  A former varsity player is defined as any person who was on a varsity team roster at Keene State or any other college or university.  The player must be retired from the sport the equivalent of one full semester prior to playing intramurals.  Any player(s) on a varsity basketball team through the first scheduled regular season game will not be eligible for intramural basketball the following semester.  Varsity baseball and softball players who complete their eligibility during the spring season are eligible to play intramural softball the next fall.  Again, in this situation, a team is limited to two former varsity players on its roster.  Any player having been off a team for a period of two years will no longer be considered a former varsity player.  Teams may have any number of these players on the roster.

5.  Any team playing with an ineligible player will forfeit any and all games played with that player.  This includes but is not limited to, players not on the team roster in the main office, players who have played on another team, or students deregistered from classes.  All players must sign the team’s roster, which includes an acknowledgement of risk statement.

6.  Players' names may be added to the roster in the Recreational Sports Office through the last regular season game.  Names added to the scorebook are illegal.  Any person not on the game roster prior to game time is ineligible.  Players who drop off one team’s roster prior to playing in an official game (practice games do not count as official games) may sign on another team’s roster in the Rec Sports Office.

7.  All players must have a current KSC ID card.  Any team allowing a player to play who is not a KSC member will be dropped from the league.  Alumni are not eligible to play.  Continuing Education/graduate students, faculty and staff who have not purchased a Recreation Center membership are not eligible to participate in the intramural sports program.

Forfeit/Default Policy

Forfeit Policy
Failing to show up for scheduled games is unfair to opponents and officials and negatively affects the program. Team captains must make it clear to their players that by signing their names on the roster, they are making a commitment to their team and teammates.

Forfeit deposits are $20. If a team progresses through the league without forfeiting any games, its entire forfeit deposit is refunded.

Teams that are not ready to play with at least the minimum number of legal players within 10 minutes after the scheduled game time lose by forfeit. Picking up players from the sidelines or other teams to start a game is not allowed.

Any team that forfeits a game will receive a “C” sportsmanship rating and is charged a $10 forfeit fee. The forfeiting team remains eligible for the playoffs after their first forfeit.  Teams that forfeit once may not use a default for another game.  Any team that forfeits twice loses its entire $20 forfeit deposit and is dropped from the league at the time of the second forfeit. Teams that do not have a representative at the scheduled captains’ meeting are fined $10 of their forfeit fee and receive a “B” sportsmanship rating.

Default Policy
Teams are allowed to default one game, unless they have previously forfeited a game. Any team that knows it will be unable to attend a scheduled contest may notify the IM coordinator (ext. 8-2869) by no later than 4 p.m. on the day of the game. For contests held on Saturday or Sunday, teams must call in to default by 4 p.m. on Friday. The purpose of allowing the default is to prevent the officials and opposing team from showing up with no one to play the contest. Teams that default one game are still eligible for the playoffs, provided they have not forfeited a game earlier in the season, and do not lose any of their forfeit deposit. However, if the team cannot make a second game, this counts as a forfeit. It may be possible to reschedule defaulted games.

Sportsmanship Code

In order to improve sportsmanlike behavior in intramural sport contests, Recreational Sports has adopted a sportsmanship code developed by Dr. Bruce Maurer of The Ohio State University.  Recreational Sports supervisors and officials will strictly enforce the code.  It is our goal to conduct games in an amiable manner.  It is the responsibility of each player to do everything possible to insure that the game atmosphere is friendly and good-natured.  The following rules of sportsmanship will be enforced:

A.  No player, coach or team follower shall:
1.         Use abusive language, threaten or abuse any other player or intramural employee, before, during or after the game.
2.         Participate in a game for which he/she is ineligible.
3.         Argue or talk back to the game official.  Only the captain may address (courteously) the game official concerning the interpretation of a rule.
4.         Intentionally strike, push or trip another player.
5.         Mistreat the facility, equipment or supplies of Keene State College.

B.  Penalty for un-sportsmanlike conduct:
1.         Player will be ejected from that game and from at least one other game.  The official will display a red card.  The ejected player must immediately leave the gym or field.  The ejected player is not allowed to participate in any IM sports until meeting with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports.
2.         Players or teams can be barred from play up to one year for extreme behavior.
3.         If a league is plagued by poor conduct, especially regarding the treatment of officials, the referees will be removed from the games and teams will call their own fouls.  In this event, there will be no playoffs and no awards.
4.         In order for a team to qualify for the playoffs, a sportsmanship average of "B" must be attained during the regular season round robin play.

C.  The Yellow/Red Card System:
1.         A yellow/red card system will be used to control player, coach, bench personnel and followers' un-sportsmanlike conduct and improper behavior (persistent infringement of any rules of the game).  When cautioning a player, coach, or other bench personnel, the official shall display the yellow card and indicate the person(s) concerned.  The second card displayed on the same person in the same contest for any un-sportsmanlike conduct shall be a red card.  When ejecting a player, coach or other bench personnel, the official shall display a red card and indicate the person concerned.  A player, coach or other bench personnel receiving a red card shall be ejected from the game and shall not be allowed to compete in the next regularly scheduled contest and may receive additional penalty as determined by the Intramural Coordinator.  Players receiving two yellow cards in separate games will be treated as the recipient of one red card.

2.  If during playoffs, un-sportsmanlike behavior occurs, the game may be suspended and the offending team will lose the game.  A team will be warned once in this case.  A player disqualified in a playoff game is out for the season.

3.  Team captains are responsible for their sidelines and spectators.  Team captains who cannot control these will be issued a caution (yellow card), and/or red card.

4.  The red/yellow card system will be used for un-sportsmanlike conduct.  Examples include, but are not limited to:
     a.         Abusive or insulting language
     b.         Any acts of unfair play
     c.         General un-sportsmanlike conduct
     d.         Red/yellow cards may be issued to any player for undue rough conduct.

5.         A technical foul or un-sportsmanlike conduct penalty will automatically result in a yellow card being assessed for the first offense.

D.  Sportsmanship Ratings
1.  In order for a team to qualify for the post-season playoffs, they must have:
     a.  No Forfeits
     b.  "B" (3.0) average sportsmanship rating during regular season

2.  Sportsmanship Rating will be based on the following criteria:

"A"     Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship: (Players cooperate fully with the officials, teammates, and opponents.  The captain calmly converses with officials about rule interpretations and calls.  The captain also has full control of his/her teammates. (4 points)

"B"     Good Conduct and Sportsmanship:   Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by the officials and/or show minor dissension, which may or may not merit a yellow card.  Teams that receive 1 yellow card will receive no higher than a "B" rating. (3 points)

"C"     Average Conduct and Sportsmanship:   Team shows verbal dissent towards officials and/or the opposing players, which may or may not merit a yellow card.  Captain exhibits minimum control over his/her teammates or himself/herself.  Teams receiving multiple yellow cards will receive no higher than a "C" rating. (2 points)

"D"     Below Average Conduct and SportsmanshipTeams constantly comment to the officials and/or opposing teams.  The team captain exhibits little or no control over teammates or himself/herself.  A team, which receives one red card (player ejected), will receive no higher than a "D" rating. (1 point)

"E"     Poor Conduct and SportsmanshipTeam is completely uncooperative.  Captain has no control over teammates, and/or himself/herself.  Any team causing a game to be forfeited, other than by not showing, or receives multiple red cards, shall receive an "E" rating. (0 points)

3.         A team which receives an "E" rating must have their captain meet with the Coordinator the following day to be eligible to play their next contest.

4.         A team must have a "B" (3.0 point average) or better sportsmanship rating during  regular season to be eligible for the playoffs.  The average sportsmanship rating will be calculated similarly to the grade point-hour ratio.
